Soundouts
In 1967, John “Jocko” Moffitt began producing a series of outdoor concerts called Soundouts. These took place just outside Woodstock on Pan Copeland’s farm. I remember attending one that year. Parking was in a field and tickets were a couple of bucks. Opposite to the stage—back about fifty feet was a light show group.
People were camped out around fires with tents and teepees. There was an audience in the hundreds. I have heard that at some of the events there were upwards of two thousand people. As I recall, that night there were quite a few acts including Bunky & Jake, Brownie McGhee & Sonny Terry and of course Cat Mother & the All Night Newsboys.

I was at the '68 Soundout on Labor Day....(and I recall Bunky & Jake, Cat Mother, Hedge & Donna and a folkie by the name of Shep...who seemed like a childlike woodsprite...as I saw his manager try to corner him for the show while he leaped about and follicked like a pixie...really.....for true... I liked his songs but either he was a spirit of the night or he was flying on some kind of brew....and I was also at the Roots of 69 Festival last August in Woodstock.
I was thrilled at sharing the memories of those great concerts with others....and the Roots Festival was a joy unto itself...

Vince, thanks for your comment. FYI, the Roots of the '69 Festival event transcript is being turned into a book called: "Roots of the 1969 Woodstock Festival--The Backstory to Woodstock." In addition, there will be a photographic essay that will provide context to the players and events that led up to the 1969 Festival. In this we are shining a light on the Sound-Out era via event posters, memorabilia and musician interviews. The book is being published by WoodstockArts and is set to launch in June.
